Procrastination.....a challenge on the yogic path

“Don’t procrastinate your illumination.”

Anandji

Procrastination: the pattern or habit of putting off to another time what we KNOW needs to happen now.

It’s amazing that we often procrastinate on one of the most important parts of our life……our own evolution. We feel the urge within to deepen in your spiritual path. The longing to deepen in inner peace, joy, bliss. That longing is within every one of us. Some of us feel it quite strongly….and it often gets stronger the more we turn toward it.

Yet, even with this deep longing arising, we find ways to distract ourselves, to turn our attention away from this longing. To procrastinate our illumination.

With this, comes the experience of suffering…… because our whole being wants to evolve……and we’ve turned away from that desire. The experience of this suffering can manifest as anxiety, depression, emotional clinging to the people in our lives, loss of energy, loss of “spark” or passion……so many ways.

If you’re currently procrastinating your illumination/evolution……what to do??

First Step: Turn Toward Illumination

The first step: Turn Toward Evolution. To choose. To make the choice and turn your attention toward your growth. To turn your attention toward those practices, thoughts, patterns that increase peace and radiance within you. This is the biggest and most important step.

Second Step: Consistency

The second step: Be Consistent. Build a daily practice that you can be consistent with. When we are consistent, every day, with our practice, we build a strong base for the peace and radiance to deepen within us.

Third Step: Don’t Listen to the Mind

Third step: Don’t listen to your thoughts. Your thoughts are based in the long history of your conditioning during all your years. These thoughts are often arise to try to keep you the same. Many fearful thoughts arise—they often start with “But what if…..” It’s human to have these thoughts. Everyone has them. The KEY is to witness the thought, then actively turn your attention away from it. Don’t give it “juice”. The truth is that these thoughts are not true……what is true is your desire and longing to evolve. Listen to that desire.

Mumukshutva.

I love this Sanskrit word! it means - the deep intense longing for liberation, freedom and self realization.

Allow this longing, mumukshutva, to grow within you. Turn your attention to That!

Fourth Step: Find Sangha

Fourth step: find community. Sangha is Sanskrit for spiritual community. There are many, many beings just like you who long for evolution and illumination. Community is essential for support to stay on the yogic path.

Procrastinate taking out the compost.

Procrastinate washing the bath tub.

Procrastinate weeding the garden.

But whatever you do ………

Don’t procrastinate your illumination.

Blessings and Namaste!

Reasonless Joy

Joy — that comes from existence….. without reason…..just is.

~ Reasonless Joy ~

Have you experienced reasonless joy?

You know, the kind that bubbles up from somewhere inside?
Those times when a smile sweeps across your face irrespective of what’s happening in the outer world???

Joy
It’s our true nature.
Often held down or held back by the stories and thoughts we’ve accumulated during our life.

Joy
It’s accessible.
First and primary way to increase joy is with the breath. Yes! The breath! It gives us access to our prana, our energetic body. As the prana increases in the body, a biochemical hormonal cocktail is released of endorphins, oxytocin, norepinephrine, and anandamide (bliss hormone). This release of hormones aids the physical experience of relaxation and joy. AND….it’s easily accessed by the breath.

Amazing, right??

Most of us are chasing happiness…..looking for it in relationships, in activities, in substances……yet here it is…as close as the breath.

A beautiful simple breath practice that can begin to give you access to your inner joy is Breath of Light! I recommend to do this practice for 5-8 minutes a day.

Breath of Light

Begin in a seated position with spine tall. You can be seated in a chair or on a cushion on the floor. If you’re sitting on a chair, be sure that your back is straight and not leaning against the back of the chair.

In this breath practice, inhale and exhale through the nose. Keep your eyes softly closed.

Inhale in seven parts. Which means that with the inhale you will make seven short, even “sips” to complete the full inhale.

When you reach the top of the breath, hold the breath in. Turn your gaze up to the third eye- area between the eyebrows. Hold the breath as long as feels comfortable.

Then slowly, softly exhale through your nose.

This is one round. Continue for 5-8 minutes. End with breathing your normal breath, through the nose for 1-2 minutes. Become aware of any sensations or shifts you notice in your mind/body/emotions/being.
